Xerox/Kurzweil Personal Reader
Audio-based documentation
- I designed, wrote, narrated, and produced this audio-based documentation for the Xerox/Kurzweil Personal Reader product.
- The Personal Reader was a portable scanner/reader for visually impaired and dyslexic users. This device enabled users to read aloud books, magazines, and other documents.
- I wrote, narrated, and produced over a hundred hours of narration for the Personal Reader and other related products in the Xerox/Kurzweil product line. These are just a few very small samples from one User Guide highlighting some of the unusual aspects of these projects.
- Because this product line was intended for visually impaired users, the documentation for the products had to be designed in ways that optimized the results of optical character recognition and audio reproduction. The documentation was produced in print, braille, and audio formats.
- For the audio-based documentation, I made a number of editorial and design tweaks to address the needs of visually impaired users, including the following:
- Using repetition rather than cross-references — “See page n…” does not work for visually impaired users
- Explicitly stating page, section, and chapter numbers and titles
- Using spatial descriptions that rely on tactile cues instead of visual references
- Mixing in encoded low-cycle audio tones at page and section breaks; the tones become audible location marker beeps when played in fast-forward or reverse
- Narrating at a slightly more rapid pace than usual — many visually impaired users listen “faster” than sighted users

Marguerite’s Place
Fundraiser video for Marguerite’s Place
- I authored and produced this video as a fundraiser/public service piece celebrating the ten-year anniversary of Marguerite’s Place, a Catholic-based, non-profit transitional housing program for women and children in crisis.
- I produced the video using Sony Vegas software.
- The music in the video is Miracles, Copyright ©️ 1998 by Kenny Lattimore.
- To reduce the download size, I have reduced the resolution of this video from its original DVD distribution resolution.
